HELP: if my car has several problems, will it be safe to drive it to the mechanic or what should I do? Ok, so my car has several problems which have overwhelmed me and are beyond me and my patience. I bought a used car and it has become a pain because everyday I discover more new problems. To start with, I need an oil change, I bought a new timing belt and I need the mechanic to install it, the car has a small leak near the radiator cap which causes it to drip small amounts of coolant and let out vapor, I need to do tune up (change filters and other maintanance stuff), and I need to get a new battery installed. The car runs, but it has a very strange sound. It has 88K miles, and I am getting completely paranoid about driving it to the mechanic because I think its gonna break down on me. It would take me about 10 minutes to get to my mechanic drving at an average of 40 mph. These error codes will tell the Mazda technician or the "Do It Yourself" mechanic about any problems that the MPV is having. When you troubleshoot your MPV's OBD system, you can even get critical information about the ODB computer itself. You will need to have a special diagnostic machine, called an OBD computer or "OBD service tool." Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need OBD service tool Step by Step : 1 Turn the OBD service tool on using the power switch on the device. 2 Locate the diagnostic input on the inside of the MPV in the driver's side foot well. 3 Insert the OBD plug into the port in the driver's foot well. 4 Turn the ignition key to the "II" position and read the error code. You will need the service manual for your model year of MPV to read the code referring to the specific problem. Tips & Warnings For more information about the error codes for your particular model year, consult the vehicle's service manual. 
Land Rover . How to Troubleshoot a Ford Cruise Control SystemThe cruise control system in most Ford vehicles is pretty reliable. Still, it's not infallible. You may experience problems with the cruise control module after years of use. When this happens, the only thing you can do is determine the problem. It can be as simple as a fuse, or more complex, like a vacuum leak. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver socket wrench Socket set Step by Step : 1 Open the fuse panel under the steering wheel by pulling up on the fuse panel release lever and pulling the fuse panel down. 2 Check the fuses for the brake lights and the cruise control. Use the diagram on the underside of the fuse panel lid to locate both of these fuses. If the brake lights don't work or the fuse for them (or the cruise control module) is burnt or damaged, the system will not work. 3 Start the vehicle and check the vacuum lines on the intake and brake booster. A vacuum leak will prevent the cruise control system from functioning properly. Rough idle and a "sucking" sound coming from the engine bay while the engine is running are clear indications that there is a vacuum leak. Vacuum leaks are simply holes in the intake hoses that allow excess air into the system. But if there is a leak, the cruise control will not be able to control the vehicle speed properly. 4 Check the throttle cable. Damaged or frayed throttle cable will prevent the cruise control from being able to precisely control the throttle. 5 Shut off the vehicle and disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the retaining nut on the negative battery cable and slide the cable off the cable clamp. 6 Check the cruise control module and combination stalk. These units rarely, if ever, fail. However, if the unit is bad, you'll want to know. Remove the screws holding the steering wheel column cover in place and pull the cover off the steering column with your fingers. Unplug the electrical plug from the cruise control switch and remove the screws holding the cruise control stalk to the steering column. Replace the unit with a known working stalk to confirm or deny switch failure. The excess and used exhaust fumes pass from the turbine to the exhaust system and continue on their way to the tailpipe and out into the air in their usual manner. 4. The more load on the engine, the hotter and faster are the exhaust fumes that turn the turbine. The faster they turn it, the more air the compressor sends to the engine and the faster the engine can go. This unique way of converting exhaust gas energy into mechanical power has a nice merry-goround effect. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, usually the first thing an engineer learns is "The simpler, the better," or, as the Zen monks put it, "Less is more." (Ecology, engineering, and philosophy all in a couple of paragraphs! Maybe I ought to change the name of this book to Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance.) Don't confuse turbocharging with supercharging. A supercharger is a pump that compresses the fuel/air mixture and forces it into the cylinders of a gasoline-powered car: Because superchargers are usually belt-driven by the engine instead of by exhaust gases, they use engine power to increase engine power. Because they're not fuel efficient, they generally are used only to increase the speed of "high-performance," low-efficiency vehicles. Turbocharging kits are available that you can install on conventional vehicles to increase their power and performance. However, because turbocharging places considerable stress on engines that weren't designed with turbocharging in mind, you run the risk of damaging your engine and voiding all existing warranties if you decide to boost Old Faithful with a turbo kit. So investigate the situation carefully before you go this route. Some owners have had marvelous success, and their engines have lived to tell the tale; others haven't been as lucky. Generally speaking, I would never attempt to turbocharge the original engine of an older car, nor would I tinker with anything but a ruggedly built engine in top condition. If Old Faithful is beginning to show the strain of passing years, it would be wiser to recycle the old workhorse and buy yourself a turbo-powered filly! Part II: What Makes It Go? Land Rover .
